'Elsewhere': Online Solo Exhibition with Limerick Museum, Limerick, October 2020

Poster design by Ciaran Nash

Elsewhere, my first online solo show was kindly hosted by Limerick Museum and funded by Limerick City and County Council. I would like to thank Dr Matthew Potter, Curator of Limerick Museum for providing me with the opportunity to exhibit my work in an exciting and friendly space, Maurice Quillinan for curating the show, Ciaran Nash for design of the poster and creation of the exhibition video and to the staff in the Art Office in Limerick City and County Council for their continued support.

This exhibition is a continuation of a series based on my past experiences of landscape. There is reference to landscape but it is the emotional connection to landscape that is the point of inquiry. These paintings are imagined spaces based on memory. They are an intuitive response, giving an arena to explore and experiment. I work by building up delicate layers, using different techniques and weights of brushstroke, meeting with the painting as it changes. Landscapes become receptacles of us, they allow us the freedom to build our own internal landscape. An architectural response is beginning to emerge in some of the works; the spaces become rooms with discreet vistas emerging, solid spaces within the four lines of a rectangle.

'Fragments': Solo exhibition with Gallery Interlude in Lucky Lane, Limerick, April 2019

Poster design by Ciaran Nash.

Fragments, my first solo show in Limerick was hosted by Gallery Interlude in the fabulous venue of Lucky Lane, right in the heart of Limerick city. The paintings exhibited were selected from my current practice and it was very exciting to see them in a dynamic and interactive space. I would like to thank Carl Doran, Bella Walsh and Ciaran Nash of Gallery Interlude for the brilliant opportunity to exhibit my work and for all their work and encouragement in making it happen.  It was a great night and a big thank you to everyone who came along and supported the opening.

This series of paintings and collages establishes a visual language and emotional response to remnants of memories about place. The work begins with old photographs from past journeys which are used as collage material for postcard explorations in watercolour. These are fragments of compositions which eventually develop into paintings that accommodate an experimentation of colour, form and surface qualities. There is a considered response to materials and subject, with a deep desire to visually communicate internal contemplation and memory of space and place.

Studio Classroom Exhibtion

Studio Classroom Exhibition, Main Foyer, Mary Immaculate College, 14th September-1st October 2015

Studio Classroom Exhibition, work from pupils in Our Lady of Lourdes, St. Mary's N.S and Presentation Primary School.

The Studio Classroom is a collaborative educational, art and research project which involved three visual artists (Jean Cleary, Kate McElroy and Julie Brazil) and three primary school teachers (Sinead O' Connor, Our Lady of Lourdes, Gearoid O' Donoghue, St. Mary's N.S., Cushla Hehir, Presentation Primary School) and children from first and sixth classes who developed their art practice through online residencies.

The primary focus of the Studio Classroom was to promote innovative ways for artists, primary school teachers and pupils to engage and respond to art practice. Connecting three artists with three primary schools demonstrated the use of virtual technology to connect studio and classroom where exciting collaborative arts practice evolved. The workshops focused on the child and imagination while promoting innovative ways in which children can respond to artists' work by working directly with artists. The workshops were multidisciplinary in nature and designed and developed in collaboration with the class teachers. The project encouraged artists, teachers, and children to explore their own creativity through the challenges set by the project.

The exhibition demonstrates that when teachers, artists and children collaborate 'magic happens'. The artist and teacher brought their unique skills to the project which has left a very positive impact on the schools, teachers said that 'It was a very meaningful experience, a unique experience and it will impact on how lessons are planned in the future'.
